Even with 20 years of DJing experience, Mr. Choc is still one of the most humble DJ’s in the industry. Having established himself as one of the top four radio mixers in the nation, Choc has come quite a way from his days on the radio in Bakersfield, alongside the now world famous DJ C-Minus.
Though you can catch Choc spinning the hottest Hip-Hop weeknights from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on POWER 106, his library ranges from Funk to Soul, Reggae to Rock, Jazz to Salsa, and even ambient music. His unique style is exactly what helped him become a part of the World Famous DJ crew, The Beat Junkies in 1996. Choc says, “ever since then, it’s been important for me to take my skill to the next level”.
With DJs that have world titles from the ITF on his side, Choc was forced to step up, and take what he could do to the next level and when he did, everyone noticed. In 2000, Mr. Choc was recognized as the West Coast DJ of the year at the Mixshow Power Summit, then was also awarded the Gavin Mixshow of the Year Award for Friday Night Flavors. Shortly after his career began to see huge momentum, he signed to Rawkus Records to produce Sound Bombing Three with Cyphersounds in 2002. After that, the accolades came rolling in. Sound Bombing Three won Choc some of the most prestigious DJ awards including Justos Mixtape Award for DJ Album of the Year (2002), and DJ Album of the Year at the Mixshow Power Summit (2002).
When Choc’s not sleeping, he’s with out a doubt Djing neither in the studio, on stage, on the radio, or in a classroom. Mr. Choc has worked with some of the biggest and hottest artists, including Funkmaster Flex, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Kanye West, LL Cool J, Oukast, Nas, KRS-1, Aaliya, 112, Tribe Called Quest, and Common. Though Choc can rock any club, he is one of the most sought after DJs for VIP parties like Alicia Keys Album Release Party, Jamie Foxx’s Super Bowl Party, and Ja Rule’s Murder Inc. Album Release Party at the Playboy Mansion, to name a few. Choc even toured with 50 Cent while promoting his first album.
Though Choc has traveled all over the world Brazil, Canada, Europe, and Australia to name a few highlights he feels most at home teaching his craft to up and coming DJs. Sometimes it feels like I’m opening up my book of secrets, and letting people into my world, says Choc when describing what its like being one of the head instructors at Scratch DJ Academy. Choc spends two days a week at Scratch-LA (www.scratch.com), teaching both beginner and intermediate DJ classes. After 20 years in the game, it just felt right to give back to a community that has given me so much life.
