Derek Hoo aka Dj Dhoo, has been enjoying a musical journey that can only be compared, as he does, to a roller coaster ride as it ranges from Hard House all the way to deep tribal, going through trance, Psychedelic Trance and Techno and then back to HOuse and Progressive House. Now he entertains the crowds on the dance-floor to the beats of Tech House with a slight touch of minimalistic elements.
His love for music started long ago. The BEATS have been rocking Derek’s life since he was only 6 years of age. His uncle, a former drummer, is the one to blame for that as he even coached him into performing to impress the family. At the age of 12, Derek got his first hi-fi set meaning that from that point on most of his saved money was to be spent in music. He was 14 when he got his first pair of turntables and a mixer, which allowed him to host various wild house parties for the delight of the underground crowd of Macau of those days. This experience landed him his first DJing experience three years later at Diana Disco Night Club in Macau.
As he turned 18, he packed his bags and moved to the UK for nearly 6 years where he explored his second passion: photography. Living in the U.K. also contributed dramatically to shape his musical influences since London conveyed him the possibility of being a regular attendant to venues like Club UK, The Heaven, Ministry of Sound and to witness several live performance from which he highlights those of 808 State, The Orb and Orbital. This experience opened him up a doorway into the world of electronic music. However, the likes of Pink Floyd and Depeche Mode are what he considers as his major influences, which allows us to perceive his wide range of musical appreciation. Unfortunately, DJing was not on the agenda during all this time spent in Europe.
In 1997 he was back home and eager to infect Macau with the Hong Kong party vibe, where he used to spend most of his time. In 1999, he joined efforts with an old friend and founded Bermuda Productions to host some of the most successful parties around town. As the local party scene improved, he re-considered his options and decided to go DJing once again, which he and the crowds that regularly share his beats on the dance floor, consider one of his best decisions so far.
